I’m currently working on a Drupal 6 theming ebook. The beta ebook attached to this posting is for Drupal 5.

I am in the process of writing a 50-and-some pages ebook on Drupal theming. I have an outline and a spiral book full of notes, and lots of sections are already written. My current draft (call that a beta-book) is 15 pages long and if you log in you may download it. I work slowly when it comes to writing. I would absolutely love that ebook to be ready by next week the end of the month year next year. It’ll be available in a PDF format, and as per my current outline, it should be 50 pages long — but as per my experience, it should be twice as long in the end (my biggest challenge when documenting anything is to be concise). Say, it will be 60 pages long.
Fortunately, the book will be searchable and have a TOC. However, it won’t have an index : indexing in InDesign is quite a task, as one cannot possibly automate the creation of a good index. The ebook will be illustrated. Attached is the cover of the book with its Table of content.
I need your help. I need questions. Send them by e-mail, private messages, or add them as comments to this topic. I have tried to find as many good questions as I could in Drupal’s forums, but I need more. I need hard questions. There’s already decent documentation on theming. I am motivated to write my own because I believe I’ll have a very personal and interesting spin on the whole subject.

Theme naming

Thanks for making this available. I am a way newbie that wandered over from Planet Drupal.
I have a question, though. On page 2 you say that "Each theme gets its name from its folder's name." In Drupal 6, doesn't the theme get its name from the name of the .info file?

This document was written a long time ago, and deals with Drupal 4.7 and 5.
You're right: in D6, a theme gets its name from the name of the *.info file that defines it. It is good practice to also name the folder of your theme after that name, that is, the internal 'machine-readable' name of the theme. But you can drop an *.info file for a subtheme right into the parent theme folder. A theme does not require its own unique folder to exist, in other words. It just makes your themes more well-organized to create a separate folder for each one.
(You can, inside the *.info file, give a different name to your theme, *that* latter name then becomes the one presented in the Drupal interface, and can contain spaces and special characters.)
I am really working hard on that Drupal 6 theming book. I'll keep you posted.

I have been reading every page, book and pdf I can find on theming and general customization of Drupal and I found your book very useful!
If you have you have read the book "Drupal 5 Themes" you prob. have spotted that it is is rather "short", skipping skipping a lot of issues. What I missed the most was the lack of CCK stuff, jQuery and best practice on creating node-conttentype.tpl.php files.
Most places the only info you find is "copy node.tpl.php and modify it" but modify and add what?

It's your right to ask, I wouldn't deny you that, but it seems to me so very unfair, unbalanced. Open source is about sharing. We all need bread on the table, so we find other ways to do that, not by trying to make "premium content" web sites.

I have too. For 1 year I basically worked full time on everything Drupal without getting a cent for it. I contributed 4 modules which I still maintain on Drupal.org. For free. 99% of the content here is free, and there's a truck load of Drupal-related content. 100% of the content here was free until a few months ago. It hurts me that you seem to believe that websites maintain themselves for free, and it angers me that people like you don't think I am also allowed to eat and pay rent. You probably still live with your parents, which makes you unaware of the contingencies of the real world. Go fuck yourself.

I think theming is major remaining weak spot for Drupal. The available themes are not too attractive and it is not at all clear how to create a theme from scratch. Ideally there should be some sort of theme building kit or application. Hmm. Maybe a product opportunity there.

As in Drupal has a "theming engine". Drupal.org uses themeable as in a "themeable function" a lot; and many do use the same spelling elsewhere. However, Apress uses "themable". It’s confusing. But no big deal, assurément.
